The Cuyahoga Soil and Water Conservation District is giving free trees to residents along streams in the Rocky River watershed. The Rocky River Backyard Buffers Program, which was funded by an Ohio Lake Erie Commission grant, is intended to restore riparian buffers on private property.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers granted approval to the City of North Royalton to build a retention basin in the Chesapeake Drive area. The basin was the main project identified by the Citizens Flooding Oversight Committee.

North Royalton City Council is considering a measure that would require wetlands or riparian areas lost to development to be remediated within the City. If suitable sites are unavailable, mitigation could be done outside of the City.

Royalton Place, a 132,000 square foot retail center with an additional 38,000 square feet of outlots, has been proposed for the northeast corner of Royalton and York Roads in North Royalton. The 32 acre site includes 7.32 acres of wetlands, and the Ohio EPA will accept public comments on the development until September 5.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency awarded grants to the Western Reserve Land Conservancy for the acquisition of conservation easements for 132 acres of riparian buffers along the East Branch of the Rocky River in Summit and Medina Counties, and to Grand River Partners for the restoration and protection of 300 acres of riparian buffers and wetlands in the lower Grand River watershed in Lake County.

The Ohio Lake Erie Commission awarded a $10,000 grant to Cleveland State University to study the nutrient structure of the Cuyahoga River, and a $9,999 grant to the Cuyahoga County Soil and Water Conservation District to establish riparian buffers on residential properties in the Rocky River watershed.

Cuyahoga County cities impacted by last summer's flooding have adopted a variety of policies and funding mechanisms to deal with the problem, but many of the efforts are too late to protect against possible flooding this spring.

Visconsi Companies plans to build The Plaza at SouthPark, a 300,000 square foot retail center on 53 acres at I-71 and Royalton Road in Strongsville, across the street from SouthPark mall. The Ohio EPA will hold a public meeting about its potential impacts on water quality on January 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Strongsville Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library.
