Turnpike noise mitigation pilot project
The Ohio Turnpike Commission will test sound barrier installations along the turnpike in Berea and Strongsville in as part of a noise mitigation pilot project.

Renaissance Park financing
Because of the changing financial climate, developers of the Renaissance Park retail development in Strongsville opted to use traditional financing instead of the TIF package approved last year.

Preservation update
The Shaker Heights Landmark Commission gave its 2008 Preservation Awards to First Baptist Church, Plymouth Church, and the Shaker Heights City Schools. In Strongsville, the renovated Old Town Hall was formally reopened.

The Plaza at SouthPark announcement
Visconsi Companies announced that the Plaza at SouthPark will be anchored by a 147,000 square foot Costco. The shopping center under construction at I-71 and Route 82 in Strongsville will also include a Best Buy and a Bed Bath & Beyond. The stores are expected to open in fall 2009.

Camp Cheerful buys land
Achievement Centers for Children completed the purchase of a 4.3 acre site on Royalton Road adjacent to Camp Cheerful in Strongsville. A hotel had been proposed for the site, but the new owners will keep it undeveloped.

Renaissance Park construction
Demolition of the structures at Pearl and Whitney Roads in Strongsville is underway, and an expansion of the Renaissance Park shopping center will be built on the site. The first 6,200 square foot building in the 125,000 square foot development (PDF) will open in April.

Site preparation is continuing for the retail development at I-71 and Route 82 in Strongsville, although no plans have been officially announced. Developer Visconsi Companies may reveal its plans in July.

Tecco's Next Level Sports Facility on Westwood Drive in Strongsville is being demolished and will be replaced by the Preserve at Westwood, a 90 unit residential subdivision.

Strongsville retail construction to start soon
Visconsi Companies has begun site preparation for the Plaza at Southpark, a retail development on 53 acres on Royalton Road near I-71 in Strongsville. The company would not comment on the project, but City officials say it will be anchored by a Costco.

Strongsville purchases property
The City of Strongsville purchased an undeveloped 25 acre site on Lunn Road. The land is zoned for industrial development, and while the City plans to use it for recreation purposes, officials hope that it will eventually be developed.

Strongsville Wal-Mart expansion to start
Construction of a 59,000 square foot addition to the Pearl Road Wal-Mart in Strongsville is expected to start this spring. When the expansion is complete, the store will become a supercenter.

Strongsville retail development to proceed
The existing structures at I-71 and Royalton Road in Strongsville will be razed within the next few months to make way for a new retail development. Visconsi Companies is expected to reveal details about the project by March 1.

Strongsville hotel proposal dropped
Achievement Centers for Children, which operates Camp Cheerful in Strongsville, agreed to purchase a five acre property adjacent to the camp, effectively canceling a proposal to built a hotel on the site. The organization does not intend to develop or sell the land.

Senior transporation update
After withdrawing from the Senior Transportation Connection of Cuyahoga County last year, the Cities of Berea, Brook Park, and Strongsville reverted to their former municipal transportation systems. Middleburg Heights, on the other hand, will continue its participation in the Senior Transportation Connection.

Camp supporters opposed to hotel
Supporters of Camp Cheerful in Strongsville are opposed to a proposed rezoning to permit construction of a hotel on an adjacent site. They say that it would destroy the natural buffer around the camp.

Marks Road extension dropped
Strongsville City Council dropped plans to extend Marks Road between Royalton Road and Albion Road. Mayor Perciak said that if the City "opened up Marks Road, it would become the Medina Highway."

New HQ for the CSC Group

The owner of a 5.5 acre property on Royalton Road in Strongsville revived plans for building a hotel on the site, and applied for rezoning the property from office building to motorist service.

No state dollars for Foltz extension
The City of Strongsville did not receive a requested state grant to extend Foltz Industrial Parkway in the Strongsville Business Park, and City officials plan to apply for a $4 million Ohio Job Ready Sites grant next year.

Strongsville retail development upheld
The Ohio Supreme Court upheld a lower court decision and rejected a citizen group's lawsuit over a proposed retail development on a 49 acre wooded property at Royalton Road and I-71. The decision may mark the end of a 14 year legal battle. A 2005 agreement with the city calls for 17 acres of the site to preserved as a conservation area.

Turnpike noise to be addressed
The transportation budget passed by Ohio legislators includes $500,000 over the next two years for an Ohio Turnpike Commission study and pilot program on reducing traffic noise. Local officials credited the four-city "Working Together to Make a Difference" group with drawing attention to the issue.

Strongsville Old Town Hall to be restored
The City of Strongsville received a $100,000 grant from the Ohio Cultural Facilities Commission for the restoration of Old Town Hall on Route 82. Restoration of the historic building is expected to cost in excess of $400,000.

Strongsville Wal-Mart to become supercenter
Strongsville officials approved expansion plans for the Wal-Mart on Pearl Road, and a groundbreaking is expected within weeks. A 60,000 square foot addition will constructed for the existing 125,000 square foot store, which will be converted to a supercenter. They hope to complete construction by late summer.

Pearl Road traffic signalization upgrades
Three cities may work together to upgrade traffic signals along an 11 mile stretch of Pearl Road. Middleburg Heights and Strongsville have approved the project, but Parma Heights is worried about funding its $42,000 portion of the project. 80% of the $1.9 million project was funded by federal CMAQ dollars.

Working Together to Make a Difference meetings conclude
At the last of four public meetings, Turnpike officials, local leaders, and residents discussed the noise, flooding, and pollution generated by the Ohio Turnpike. Turnpike officials pledged to meet with community leaders within two months to discuss possible solutions.

The Plaza at SouthPark
Visconsi Companies plans to build The Plaza at SouthPark, a 300,000 square foot retail center on 53 acres at I-71 and Royalton Road in Strongsville, across the street from SouthPark mall. The Ohio EPA will hold a public meeting about its potential impacts on water quality on January 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Strongsville Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library.

Peace Palace plans perturb people
Some people in Northeast Ohio are leery of Maharishi's plans to build Peace Palaces in Brecksville, Mayfield Heights, Parma, and Strongsville because of poor experiences with properties he formerly owned in North Randall and Avon Lake.
