One recommendation for funding greenspace improvements is the greater use of existing open space and environmental funds. A first step is creating an awareness of those programs.
The matrix below includes a list of existing sources of greenspace funding available from federal, state, and local government agencies, and from non-profit organizations. The column headings indicate the primary use for the program's funds and is intended as a quick sort for identifying those programs which may be applicable for specific greenspace related activities. Those program names in blue are linked to web sites which provide more detailed descriptions of the program, along with information on where to apply for funds. To be certain that a particular program is applicable to your project, the more detailed description of the program should be referenced.
Many of the links for programs at the federal level will direct you to the Catalogue of Federal Domestic Assistance. Type in the number next to the program's name and you will be taken to that program's description.
Ohio Greenways also publishes a hardcopy summary of various state and federal sources of funding for greenway projects. The U.S. EPA maintains a Catalog of Funding Sources for Watershed Protection.
In addition, there are a number of organizations such as the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, The Trust for Public Land, and The Nature Conservancy which work with communities to assist in finding funding for projects.
