A great variety of environmental conditions can be found within Cuyahoga County. Cuyahoga County is at the transition point between the Appalachian Plateau to the east and the Plains to the west. The County has also been covered by glaciers and ancient lakes which have left their marks on the landscape. These underlying forces have had an impact on the soil, plant and animal types which can be found, and even the weather which is experienced in certain parts of the County. Not all of the environmentally sensitive areas within the County are located within the open space corridors identified for protection. Current inventories of sensitive areas are limited to those sites already located within protected areas such as the Metroparks. More information is needed on the location of such sites outside of currently protected properties. Examples of such sites which should be protected include:

Cuyahoga Valley Hillside
The eastern face of the Cuyahoga River Valley in Valley View is an example of where a lack of protection of steep slopes has resulted in excess erosion, slumping of the hillside, and increased sedimentation in waterways.
